生活在非洲的斑馬，其身上醒目的「黑白條紋」是一大特色，而且每隻斑馬的條紋都不一樣，不過斑馬究竟是「黑底白斑」還是「白底黑斑」？
其實有動物學家表示，儘管每隻斑馬條紋都不一樣，但所有斑馬的皮膚顏色都是黑色。
加利福尼亞大學戴維斯分校的行為和進化生態學家和生物學家卡羅（Tim Caro）表示，儘管各種斑馬有著不同的圖案和顏色，但所有斑馬的皮膚顏色都相同：黑色；許多人都以為斑馬是「白底黑斑」的原因在於，雖然斑馬的皮膚是黑色的，但斑馬的顏色比黑毛淺，尤其是腹部顏色更淺，所以才讓斑馬看起來好像是白底，帶有黑色條紋。
