2021馬來西亞第七屆山打根藝術節國際音樂大賽(The 7th Sandakan Music Festival)，南華大學民族音樂學系莊子瑩、張捷恩、陳承揚、吳宛蓉、黃沛薌等五位學生分別於流行歌唱、鋼琴及聲樂三項類別中奪得3金2銀，成績亮眼，除了為校爭光，更讓民族音樂學系在國際舞台上嶄露頭角。
南華大學民族音樂學系成立20年以來，以學習世界音樂聞名，栽培孕育出無數的表演藝術人才，特別是在2021年疫情時代，系上學生更是把握閉門苦練的絕佳時機，在即將告別2021年前，於國內外的表演藝術賽事中，展現驚豔的學習成果，斬獲了無數的榮譽，民族音樂學系全體師生與有榮焉。
校方表示，今年音樂大賽因受疫情影響，改為線上作品呈現，南華大學民族音樂學系共五位同學報名參賽，與世界各地包含馬來西亞、新加坡、美國、波蘭、澳大利亞、中國大陸等地，超過200位音樂選手角逐，在激烈的競爭下，五位同學以精湛的表演，獲得3金2銀之佳績，分別由莊子瑩與張捷恩勇奪「流行歌唱組」金獎；陳承揚也奪得「鋼琴專業組」金獎；吳宛蓉與黃沛薌則榮獲「聲樂專業組」銀獎。
民族音樂系執行副主任張雅婷除了祝賀此次在國際賽事嶄露頭角的同學要繼續的努力外，同時也表示，近年系上多項優異的成果展現都被國內外表演藝術團體高度重視。這兩年來，系上也極力推廣跨域表演，開始招收舞蹈專長的學生，系上同學們都要共同學習音樂基礎訓練、肢體開發課程，其目的是要期許同學除了在自身的主修演奏基本功努力下，更要拓展開發跨界表演藝術整合的能力，開拓全新的藝術視野，在未來的藝術舞台上，無論幕前幕後，都能夠獨當一面，提升自我的競爭能力，成為具有創新思維的表藝人才。
