嘉義縣動物保護教育園區正式啟用，改建後的多功能動保園區有生命教育、專業診療、舒適收容、節能減碳等「四大功能」，活化舊有空間，增設全新設備，縣長翁章梁、農委會副主委黃金城與各界人士共同出席園區啟用典禮，期盼新的空間與人員編制能為嘉義的流浪動物收容帶來新氣象，妥善照顧毛孩的一生。

嘉義縣的流浪犬貓原收容於民雄，收容所由鐵皮屋改建而成，因位處偏僻，空間潮濕，環境不佳。為改善犬貓收容環境，縣府爭取改建並獲中央支持，運用總經費9,130萬元，將鐵皮屋徹底改造翻新並設計全新LOGO，成為兼具生命教育的多功能動保園區。
園區基地約3千平方公尺，規劃為3樓，總樓地板面積約2318平方公尺，提供40間犬舍及2間貓舍，約容納210隻犬貓)。主體建物利用屋頂斜角交錯規劃與中央通道的上升氣流，有效增加動物舍的換氣量；搭配半開放犬舍設計，提供犬隻充分的活動空間及適當日照，有效改善以往昏暗、擁擠悶臭狀況。

為讓動物們得到最好照顧，家畜所派出獸醫師醫療團進駐，在園區規畫專屬醫療區，包括手術室、醫療檢查室、加護病房、隔離檢疫區，並購置手術無影燈、輸液電子幫浦、血球與生化分析儀、手術電刀、診療及手術器械車等設備，由於救援動物常為車禍案件，因此增設X光室，對動物提供全方位醫療。
為推廣認養及教育宣導，設置貓屋、毛小孩展示區和生命教育多媒體簡報室。未來將成立寵物管理課及動物保護管制隊擴編，新增管制車、救援車並推動終領養專案，軟硬體與人力編制一次到位，111年將是嘉義縣動物保護啟航之年。

縣長翁章梁表示，近年人犬衝突不斷，為積極解決問題，成立專責窗口「精準捕抓」專線，並組成動物保護管制隊、獸醫師醫療團與動保稽查員等三大團隊，採『舒緩人犬衝突』、『動物救援』、『動保裁罰』與『創新專案』等四大面向高效率執行。108年起連三年全國動物收容管制業務評比連連獲獎，110年更榮獲全國第1名「特優」。此外新設「寵物管理科」所新增業務，嘉義縣將成立寵物管理課，負起本縣毛小孩從「出生至死亡各階段，全面照顧」的使命，完善動物保護相關工作。
