由於冬季係蓮霧產季，農藥價格即會上漲，農民均會提早購買預置農藥儲放蓮霧園倉庫內來降低農作之成本，10月初在林邊鄉連續發生數起蓮霧園倉庫內農藥遭竊，竊嫌知悉農民本項習性認有機可乘，並利用夜間到林邊偏遠蓮霧園倉庫行竊降低遭警方查緝機率。
由於這類案件發生地均在偏僻地域，東港分局受理後也立即派員前往採證鑑識及調閱路口監視器，並調整規劃該地區「護農專案」巡邏勤務防止是類案件發生，並成立專案小組偵辦，歷經2個多月的偵辦，掌握王嫌、余嫌等2人涉案嫌疑重大，立即向屏東地檢署聲請搜索票前往執行，由於現行法令規定買賣農藥需實名制，一般農藥行不願收來歷不明農藥，竊嫌銷贓無門，本案失竊農藥及農具查扣到案後由被害人領回，全案經偵訊後以竊盜罪嫌移送屏東地檢署偵辦。
東港分局表示：屏東縣是農業大縣，農產品係農民辛勞付出的收獲，亦是維持家庭經濟之命脈，東港警方絕不容許宵小竊取農民大半年辛勞，將會加強各項護農專案勤務！且遇案將會積極鍥而不捨偵辦展現執法之絕心，絕不寬貸。
