民雄大士爺祭今（18）日（農曆7月21日）清晨紙糊神尊開光後正式登場，上午6時30分縣長翁章梁、立委陳明文及大士爺廟董事長周漳炎率董監事、地方各界祈福團拜，祈求觀音大士和諸聖神佛保佑嘉義縣合境平安，重頭戲20日深夜將恭送大士爺「火化升天」，為大士爺祭劃下圓滿句點。

「信仰帶給人力量！」翁章梁說，民雄人充滿智慧，農曆七月透過大士爺的力量安定人心，這是民雄流傳百年的宗教文化，也是地方珍貴的祭典，每年結合宗教、人文和旅遊的力量，繁榮民雄這塊好所在，更是嘉義縣重要的宗教文化資產之一。
一年一度民雄大士爺祭農曆7月21日起一連舉行3天，清晨5時大士爺紙糊神尊在臨時安厝的大殿開光點眼；威風凜凜的觀音大士，化身端坐正殿執行監普任務，手持四方令旗驅煞，接受各界信眾膜拜。

清晨6時30分，主祭官翁章梁和大士爺廟董事長周漳炎、立委陳明文、民雄鄉長何嘉恒等民代及各界人士循古禮舉行恭祝大士爺聖誕團拜儀式，主祝及陪祝者行三跪九叩首禮，接著行上香禮、獻聖茶、獻果、獻素五牲、獻壽桃、獻爵，最後翁章梁恭讀疏文，再行三跪九叩首禮叩謝神恩、燒疏文，儀式肅穆隆重。
相傳乾隆年間，每年農曆7月1日起每天下午陰風慘淡，常聞鬼聲啼哭，唯有觀音大士顯身才足以鎮壓孤魂，因此民間在每年農曆7月1日用紅緞塗大士爺像奉祀壇中，誦經3天超渡孤魂，並於農曆7月21至23日連續3天舉辦祭禮。
觀世音菩薩化身的大士爺是專管「鬼」之神，連續3天的祭典結束後，紙糊大士爺神像將連同山神、土地公等紙糊品，火化升天，象徵大士爺帶走眾家好兄弟，讓地方恢復平靜。
