昨（9）日台灣隊經典賽首戰，台灣隊以5：12的大分差慘輸巴拿馬。包含副總統賴清德在內的兩萬名球迷親眼目睹血洗過程，6局上時比分為11:1，差點滿足扣倒條件（WBC規定比賽進行達七局以上，雙方差距達10分，比賽將提前結束）。
比賽的第一個轉捩點出現在4局上，前三局表現不若熱身賽穩定的胡智為，雖出現亂流但仍然為球隊守住0:0。此時，教練團決定讓投球數來到50球的胡智為繼續投球。他上一局已經被敲出長打，狀況有所下滑。本局面對首名打者被擊出二壘安打，面對下一棒又投出保送，接著又被敲出安打丟掉第1分。在無人出局二、三壘有人的情況，台灣隊決定換上味全龍終結者陳冠偉拆彈。上場後被敲出三支安打丟掉4分，其中兩分是胡智為的自責分。陳冠偉主投0.2局失掉2分後，教練團才換上李振昌用三振結束這個半局。
胡智為先發三局失三分，投了62球。依照WBC的用球數規定，接下來三場小組賽無法再上場（圖＿CPBL 中華職棒臉書）。

相對於表現慘烈的投手群，台灣隊的打者們交出不錯的成績，例如江坤宇3打數敲出2安打、鄭宗哲5打數3安打以及敲出兩分砲的吳念庭。但是擔任第六棒的王柏融表現持續低迷，三次上來打擊時壘上都有跑者，結果他都沒能成功送回隊友。棒子冷颼颼，是打線上最大的坑。
