日本隊逆轉擊敗墨西哥，挺進冠軍賽（圖＿WBC官方）。
2023 WBC世界棒球經典賽四強戰，由日本對決墨西哥。日本隊派出「令和怪物」佐佐木朗希先發，墨西哥則推出洛杉磯天使的左投桑多瓦（Patrick Sandoval）。勝隊將與先一步進入冠軍賽的美國隊正面交鋒。
桑多瓦前三局展現壓制力，讓日本隊九上九下。佐佐木朗希前三局被敲兩支安打未失分。戰況到了4局有所改變，4局上2出局後佐佐木朗希連挨2安，接著烏瑞亞斯（Luis Urias）轟出3分砲幫助墨西哥取得3:0領先。日本隊5、6兩局皆攻佔滿壘但是無功而返。7局下日本隊終於把握機會，近藤健介、大谷翔平接連上壘，狀況火燙的吉田正尚面對剛上來的投手羅梅洛（JoJo Romero），敲出右外野方向3分彈，幫助日本武士扳平比數。吉田正尚本屆賽會已累積13分打點，創下經典賽單屆最多打點紀錄。
8局上墨西哥攻勢再起，連續兩隻長打要回領先。日本隊換下山本由伸，換上第三任投手湯淺京己仍被擊出安打，墨西哥取得5:3領先。8局下日本隊靠著精密的戰術執行追回一分。
9局下，日本隊輪到中心棒次進行最後反攻，大谷翔平先是敲出二壘安打，吉田正尚精彩選球獲得保送。一、二壘有人的情況下，村上宗隆逮住一顆偏高的球，一棒擊向中外野深遠處形成再見安打，日本隊最終就以6:5逆轉墨西哥，晉級冠軍戰。

村上宗隆本屆賽會狀態不佳，小組賽僅打出兩支安打，打擊率兩成不到，還苦吞8次三振。八強與義大利的比賽中貢獻兩安，似乎有甦醒跡象，但是今天前3打席又都遭到三振，第4打席界外飛球出局。最後一個打席，村上宗隆終於把握機會證明自己，敲出再見安打，讓球迷紛紛向村上宗隆道歉，感謝「村神」終於降臨。

賽後，墨西哥總教練吉爾（Benji Gil）表示：「日本晉級了，但今晚是棒球的勝利。」充滿風度的發言讓球迷豎起大拇指。
