卡羅萊納黑豹隊第四輪12順位選進Chandler Zavala（圖_NC State Football）。
現年24歲的Chandler Zavala通往NFL的路途走得有些曲折，但他終究來到了這裡。
高中時本來是籃球員的Zavala，因為壯碩的身材和運動能力被美式足球教練Dan Bruton 挖掘，Dan Bruton 告訴他足球比籃球更有機會讓你獲得獎學金。於是，Chandler Zavala在高中最後一年加入美式足球隊，擔任近端鋒(TE)，因為傷勢的關係只參與了一半的賽事。當時Zavala不過是沒有獲得評價的0星高中生，但NCAA的二級學校Fairmont State 還是注意到他出色的身體素質，給予他入學機會。
大一，擔任進攻哨鋒(G)的他體重僅有260磅，他的廚師爸爸Demetrio Zavala 幫他設計菜單以增加體重，有一次他收到了爸爸寄來的25磅牛肉。他會自己幫牛肉去骨斷筋、切塊料理。經過長期一天吃四餐的洗禮後， Zavala增加了40磅的體重。Demetrio Zavala 是頗負盛名的廚師，曾經六度獲得實境節目《 真人秀：廚藝大戰》(Chopped)的冠軍。

因為膝傷的緣故，大一的Zavala只打了3場比賽。大二開始，Zavala逐漸綻露光芒，連續兩年入選東部山區聯盟 (MEC) 的第一隊。大四那年(2020)，因為Covid-19疫情的關係而取消了所有賽事。幾經思索後，Zavala想要在更高層級的比賽測試自己的實力。當時他的母親因為工作的關係搬到北卡州，加上北卡州立大學(NC State University)進攻組教練熱情招募他入隊，所以他決定轉學到那裏。
進入北卡州立後，他的父親持續為他的飲食把關。Zavala的冰箱裡總是塞滿水果、鮭魚、全雞、火雞香腸、紐約客牛排和好幾箱蛋。Zavala會自己煎牛排、處理全雞、煎八顆蛋的歐姆蛋捲。2021 年 10 月 2 日，Zavala在對陣路易斯安那理工大學的比賽中背部受傷，必須接受手術，因此錯過球隊最後七場比賽。他打算向NCAA上訴再參與明年球季，NCAA規定如果球員在賽季中（至少打四場比賽）受到傷病困擾的話，會允許他們再獲得一年的參賽資格。
球評表示Chandler Zavala(右)的體型寬厚，下盤穩固，具有出色的防守藝術，但是敏捷度以及反應速度不算太好（圖_NC State Football）。
2021年12月，他的父親Demetrio Zavala在家昏倒，送醫後發現闌尾和部分的大腸破裂，醫生進行為時七小時的手術才把他救回來。
12月底，Zavala申請延長參賽年限的請求被駁回，Zavala決定提起上訴。他的故事逐漸受到關注，社群媒體上#LetChandlerPlay的hashtag開始發酵。校方聘請法律顧問幫助他上訴。負責這件案件的律師Jason Montgomery 表示，因為Zavala在 Fairmont State 時，球隊沒有按照NCAA的規章處理Zavala的傷勢，因此NCAA沒辦法準備評估傷勢嚴重程度。在蒐集足夠的資料後，2022年4月，NCAA終於接受上訴， Zavala可以重新披上球隊戰袍。
「那段時間對我來說很難熬，我爸爸的病情加上沒辦法和隊友一起打球，真是太沉重了。 」 Chandler Zavala說道。
大學的最後一個賽季，Zavala出賽13場比賽，僅讓對手執行過0.5次擒殺，讓四分衛遭受4次壓力，作為一位傑出的進攻保護者，他入選All-ACC年度第一隊。
進入黑豹隊後，他將和北卡州立時期的前隊友Ikem Ekwonu重逢。Ikem Ekwonu於去年第一輪第六順位被選進，擔任進攻截鋒(OT)，他是黑豹隊史上首位新秀賽季全勤的球員。未來，他們將成為今年狀元四分衛Bryce Young的最佳保護者。
